About the game
Himalaya casts players as chiefs of Himalayan tribes leading yak caravans across snowy plateaus to gather goods like salt, tea, and gold. Using an action-queue system, players program six moves in advance, trying to anticipate rivals while delivering goods to build political, religious, and economic influence. The game's unusual scoring, eliminating the player with least religious influence, then least political influence, before the final two compete on economic strength, makes for a distinctly tense finale. Designed for 3-4 players, it's a clever blend of route-planning and area influence.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editors highlight Himalaya's elimination-style scoring as one of its most memorable quirks; it forces you to stay competitive across all three influence tracks rather than specializing in just one. The programmed-movement puzzle rewards careful anticipation of opponents. It's best at its intended four-player count, where the tri-elimination scoring truly shines.
What we like
- Unique tri-elimination scoring system creates real end-game tension.
- Programmed action-queue movement rewards forward planning.
- Solid medium weight suitable for regular Eurogame groups.
- Distinct theme of Himalayan trade caravans.
Keep in mind
- Scoring system is designed primarily for four players, weaker at lower counts.
- Programmed movement can lead to plans being foiled unpredictably.
- Some downtime while opponents plan simultaneous moves.
Who it's for
Best for 3-4 players aged 10+ who enjoy route-planning, area influence, and clever, unusual scoring mechanisms in a medium-weight Eurogame.
