About the game

Fortress America imagines a near-future alternate history in which the continental United States is invaded simultaneously from three directions: Asian forces from the west, a South American coalition from the south, and Soviet-led European legions from the east. Up to four players take sides, with one controlling America's defense and up to three others commanding the invading fronts, each starting with all their units already in hand to manage carefully throughout the game. The lone American defender begins with only a skeleton force but builds up steadily through a random card deck and an increasingly powerful orbital laser defense system as the game progresses. Combined arms bonuses reward players who coordinate infantry, mechanized units, and air power together in a single assault.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a classic slice of 1980s multi-front wargaming, memorable for its bold Cold War-adjacent premise and asymmetric structure pitting one lone defender against three invading fronts. The escalating power of America's defenses as the game progresses gives it a satisfying narrative arc even within a fairly abstract wargame framework. It's a long, dated design by modern standards, but it still holds real appeal for wargamers who enjoy big multiplayer conflict simulations.

What we like

  • Classic asymmetric multi-front invasion scenario is genuinely distinctive.
  • Combined arms bonus system rewards tactical coordination.
  • Escalating American defense builds satisfying narrative tension over time.
  • Supports a full four-player experience with clearly differentiated factions.

Keep in mind

  • Long three-hour playtime demands a dedicated group.
  • Dated production and design compared to modern wargames.
  • Significant downtime for players managing large unit counts.
  • Asymmetric balance may favor certain invading factions over others.

Who it's for

Best for wargame enthusiasts aged 12 and up, in groups of two to four, who enjoy asymmetric multi-front conflict simulations and Cold War-era themes.
