About the game

Morels is a two-player card game about foraging, cooking, and selling mushrooms in an old-growth forest. Players draft cards from a shared tableau to collect sets of matching mushrooms, which can be sold for foraging sticks that unlock new tactical options, or cooked for victory points. A small night deck adds rare moonlit mushrooms into the mix, while poisonous varieties and a hand-size limit force careful planning every turn. As cards decay from the tableau, the "forest" is constantly refreshed, keeping choices fresh throughout the game. It's a light, elegant set-collection game with real tactical bite.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team enjoys Morels for squeezing a surprising amount of tactical tension into a simple, quick-playing card game. The tug-of-war between selling for utility and cooking for points creates constant meaningful decisions. Its accessible rules and short playtime make it a great filler for a two-player evening. Being strictly two-player limits its use as a broader group game night option.

What we like

  • Elegant, quick-playing set-collection design with real tactical depth.
  • Sell-versus-cook tension creates meaningful decisions each turn.
  • Charming foraging theme with educational mushroom flavor.
  • Easy to teach and fast to set up.

Keep in mind

  • Strictly limited to two players.
  • Light overall complexity may not satisfy heavier strategy gamers.
  • Card decay mechanic can occasionally feel randomly punishing.

Who it's for

A great fit for two-player game nights, casual and family gamers aged 10+ who enjoy light set-collection card games.
