About the game

Gang of Four is a classic ladder-climbing card game inspired by the Chinese game Big Two, themed loosely around cunning political maneuvering. Players race to empty their hands first by playing sets of cards that beat the previous player's combination in rank, with a special rule allowing four-or-more-of-a-kind plays to overtake smaller ones. Rounds continue until everyone passes, and whoever empties their hand first avoids penalty points, while remaining players are penalized based on cards left in hand. First to reach one hundred points loses, so shedding your hand quickly and strategically is key. It's a tight, competitive card game for 3-4 players.

Hobbli's Notes

Gang of Four is a well-regarded implementation of the Big Two card family, elevated with lovely component quality from Days of Wonder and a compelling, if loosely applied, political theme. Its hand-management puzzle of when to play big sets versus holding back is simple to grasp but has real depth for experienced card gamers. Being locked to 3-4 players narrows its flexibility somewhat, and downtime can build as hands run long. Still, for fans of climbing card games, this remains a classic worth revisiting.
