About the game
Walnut Grove blends jigsaw-style tile placement with worker-placement farming, tasking players with expanding and managing a farm across eight in-game years. Each season brings a different challenge: planting land tiles in spring, gathering resources in summer, trading in the city each fall, and feeding and heating workers through winter. Careful tile shapes and rondel-style city movement reward players who plan several seasons ahead.
Hobbli's Notes
We like how Walnut Grove layers classic tile-laying and worker-placement ideas, echoes of Carcassonne and Agricola are easy to spot, into something that feels distinctly its own. The rondel-based city actions create a nice tension between speed and cost. It runs a bit long for its complexity level, but the included solo rules add welcome flexibility.
What we like
- Combines tile-laying and worker placement in a fresh way.
- Rondel-style city actions add tactical tension.
- Solo rules included for single-player sessions.
- Seasonal structure gives a satisfying sense of progression.
Keep in mind
- Notable downtime given its mid-weight complexity.
- Resource and worker management can feel fiddly at first.
- Tile-shape optimization may not appeal to all players.
Who it's for
Suited to strategy gamers aged 10 and up who enjoy tile-laying and worker-placement games in groups of one to four.
