About the game
The Boss is a card game of deduction and bluffing set among rival gangs vying for loot and dodging sanctions across American cities. Players gain information from each card played, then dispatch gang members, pros and wannabes alike, to cities to control the payout, with Chicago forcing a split with Al Capone himself. Whoever holds the most influence in a city claims its rewards or takes its punishment. It supports two to six players in about forty minutes, with a small board just for tracking scores. Stakes rise as the game progresses, especially in the high-value Chicago location.
Hobbli's Notes
The Boss offers a tidy blend of hidden information and area-majority tension wrapped in a fun mafia theme. It rewards players who can read the table and time their commitments well, though the payoff depends a lot on your group's appetite for bluffing and backstabbing. It's a solid, underrated pick for groups that enjoy social deduction with a card-driven engine.
What we like
- Clever mix of deduction and bidding creates genuinely tense decisions.
- Mafia theme adds fun flavor to the bluffing and backstabbing.
- Scales well for groups up to six players.
- Escalating stakes, especially in Chicago, keep late rounds exciting.
Keep in mind
- Downtime increases noticeably at higher player counts.
- Bluffing-heavy design may not suit players who prefer pure strategy.
- Minimal components mean less table presence than themed games.
Who it's for
Best for groups of two to six players, ages 10 and up, who enjoy bluffing, deduction, and light betting games.
