About the game
Famiglia is a fast, two-player card game from designer Friedemann Friese in which rival mob bosses build up their gangs by trading in low-value gangsters for higher-value ones. Each of the four mafia families offers a unique special ability, letting players choose between straightforward trades or riskier power plays that add more gangsters to their play area. With a hand of only a handful of cards and a runtime around 30 minutes, it's a tight duel of resource management and timing. The player with the most valuable, best-organized gang at the end wins.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's editorial team likes Famiglia as a compact, portable two-player duel that packs real decision-making into a small box. The four-family asymmetry gives it more replay variety than its simple footprint suggests. It won't satisfy players looking for deep strategy, but as a quick head-to-head filler it's a reliable pick. It's an easy recommendation for fans of Friese's design sensibilities in a bite-sized package.
What we like
- Compact, portable format perfect for travel or a quick session.
- Four distinct families provide asymmetric strategies and replay value.
- Quick 30-minute playtime with meaningful decisions each turn.
- Light mafia theme adds fun flavor to a simple trading mechanism.
Keep in mind
- Strictly two-player, so it can't accommodate larger groups.
- Limited long-term depth for players wanting a heavier strategic challenge.
- Small card pool means some plays can feel repetitive over time.
Who it's for
