About the game

Samarkand: Routes to Riches puts players in the role of merchant family members who marry into wealthy households and expand their trading networks across the map. On each turn, you either marry into a new family or extend an existing family's trade route, racing to meet other families and claim goods tokens along the way. Victory points come from trade relationships, collected goods, and accumulated wealth. The game rewards careful sequencing of marriages and route expansion to outpace rival merchants.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a lesser-known trading and route-building Euro with an interesting 'marriage' twist on the usual company-building formula. It's solid for fans of network-building games, though it doesn't have the polish or fame of bigger genre names.

What we like

  • Distinctive 'marrying into families' theme layered onto route building.
  • Stock and goods collection add welcome economic depth.
  • Moderate complexity keeps it accessible to Euro-curious players.
  • Supports a wide range of 2 to 5 players.

Keep in mind

  • Downtime can increase noticeably with a full five-player table.
  • Older, niche title with less community support than bigger route-builders.
  • Combination of marriage and trade mechanics may need extra explanation to teach.

Who it's for

Suited to Euro-game fans aged 10 and up who enjoy trading and route-building, in groups of 2 to 5.
