About the game

Cosmic Encounter is a legendary game of galactic conquest in which each player commands an alien race with a unique, rule-breaking special power, sent out to establish colonies on five foreign planets. Turns center on Encounters, where players negotiate alliances, bluff with Encounter cards, and call on allies to tip the odds in their favor. What makes the game endlessly fresh is that alien powers can bend or outright shatter the base rules, from stealing colonies to reversing outcomes entirely. This 1991 Mayfair edition refines the classic 1977 Eon original with clearer timing icons and updated components. Negotiation, betrayal, and constantly shifting alliances make every game wildly different from the last.

Hobbli's Notes

Cosmic Encounter is a genuine hobby classic and still one of the best negotiation-and-chaos games ever designed; the alien powers create rules-breaking combos that keep even veteran groups discovering new interactions decades later. The social negotiation and alliance-forming is where the real game lives, more than the dice or cards themselves. It rewards groups who enjoy loud, chaotic, ever-shifting table talk; quieter or more tactically-minded players may find the swinginess frustrating.

What we like

  • Unique alien powers create near-infinite replayability.
  • Negotiation and alliance-building drive genuinely social, dynamic gameplay.
  • A certified hobby classic with decades of ongoing support and expansions.
  • Rules-breaking powers keep even experienced groups discovering new strategies.

Keep in mind

  • High variance and swingy outcomes can frustrate control-focused players.
  • Negotiation-heavy design depends heavily on a talkative, engaged group.
  • Alien power asymmetry can occasionally feel unbalanced.

Who it's for
