About the game

Royal Palace is a majority-control board game for 2 to 4 players set during the Age of Reason. Players place servants across nine palace locations, taking actions scaled to how many servants they have there, while majority holders earn bonus actions. Gold and royal seals are used to recruit noblemen who provide the game's main path to victory points. The interplay between servant placement, action points, and shifting majorities creates constant tactical tension.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editors see Royal Palace as a solid, underrated entry in the area-majority genre from designer Xavier Georges. The layered action system rewards players who can read the table and time their majority pushes. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it delivers a tight, competitive experience for fans of mid-weight Euros. The noblemen recruitment adds a nice secondary path to points.

What we like

  • Rewarding majority-control tension around palace locations.
  • Multiple paths to victory through gold, seals, and noblemen.
  • Action-point system scales interestingly with servant placement.
  • Solid replayability from a mid-weight, tactical ruleset.

Keep in mind

  • Downtime can build up as players calculate optimal servant placement.
  • Theme is fairly abstract and may not fully land for all players.
  • Newer players can be at a disadvantage against majority-savvy veterans.

Who it's for

Best for adult and teen gamers (12+) who enjoy area-majority and action-point Euro games in groups of 2-4.
