About the game

Spades is a classic trick-taking card game for four players in fixed partnerships, played with a standard deck and spades as the permanent trump suit. Each player receives thirteen cards and bids how many tricks they expect to win; partners then combine their bids and try to collectively meet or exceed that total across the hand. Scoring rewards accurate bidding heavily, and an optional nil bid lets a player wager on taking zero tricks while their partner plays normally. Countless regional and house rule variations exist, including the popular Call Break variant common in South Asian card-playing circles. It's a time-tested classic that has been played competitively and casually for generations.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team considers Spades an easy recommend simply because it's so widely known and so well-tuned after decades of play. The bidding and nil-bid options add real tension without complicating the core trick-taking, which stays clean and easy to teach. It rewards partnership communication and careful counting in a way that keeps repeated games interesting. As a fixed four-player, two-team game, it's less flexible for odd group sizes, but within that constraint it's a rock-solid classic.

What we like

  • Widely known, time-tested trick-taking rules many players already understand.
  • Partnership play encourages communication and teamwork.
  • Nil bids add tense, high-risk, high-reward decisions.
  • Standard deck means it's always accessible and cheap to play.
  • Endless hand variety keeps repeated play interesting.

Keep in mind

  • Requires exactly four players in fixed partnerships.
  • Bidding and trick-taking strategy take practice to master well.
  • Some downtime while waiting for other players to complete tricks.
  • Scoring penalties for missed bids can feel harsh to newcomers.
