About the game

Tower of Babel is a Reiner Knizia design in which players collaboratively build the wonders of the ancient world while competing to control the majority share of each. Using a clever "always active" system, players earn points and influence during opponents' turns by trading cards and offering deals. Auction, hand management, and set collection interweave to create constant tension over when wonders complete and the game ends. It supports 3-5 players in about 45 minutes.

Hobbli's Notes

We appreciate this as a lesser-known but sharp Knizia design that captures his signature "everyone matters every turn" philosophy. The trading mechanic active on other players' turns keeps engagement high throughout, a hallmark of Knizia's best work. It's a cerebral game about reading opponents' motivations as much as managing your own hand. A great pick for fans of Knizia's auction and set-collection classics.

What we like

  • Classic Knizia design with constant player engagement.
  • Clever trading mechanic active on every turn.
  • Multiple paths to victory through disks and wonders.
  • Moderate playtime around 45 minutes.

Keep in mind

  • Player elimination-like frustration if you fall behind on trades.
  • Ancient wonders theme is fairly abstract.
  • Some optional action cards reportedly unbalance the game.

Who it's for

Suited for ages 10+ strategy gamers who enjoy Knizia-style auction and set-collection games; best with 3-5 players.
