About the game

Stupor Mundi casts players as vassals of Frederick II, the Holy Roman Emperor known as 'stupor mundi' (the wonder of the world), building castles and kingdoms in medieval Sicily and southern Italy. Players summon allies, construct structures, and promote specialists while upgrading their castles' towers, walls, and keeps to expand their capabilities. A card-selection mechanism drives actions, some of which trigger empire-wide edicts affecting all players, forcing tough choices between loyalty to the Emperor and support of independent allies. It supports 1-4 players in sessions of around 150 minutes.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team is intrigued by Stupor Mundi's blend of deck and bag building with tech-track castle upgrades, which gives players a strong sense of building a personal engine over the course of the game. The shared edicts triggered by other players' actions add a layer of reactive strategy not always found in solo-friendly euros. As a newer release, it hasn't yet built the track record of more established titles in its genre. It looks like a promising pick for fans of medieval economic engine-builders, though we'd recommend trying it before fully committing.

What we like

  • Castle upgrade system gives a satisfying sense of long-term engine growth.
  • Shared edicts add reactive strategy tied to other players' choices.
  • Strong solo mode supports players without a regular group.
  • Historical Frederick II theme offers an unusual medieval setting.

Keep in mind

  • As a very recent release, it lacks an established track record.
  • Moderate-to-high complexity may require a few plays to fully grasp.
  • Card-selection and edict systems add rules overhead for new players.

Who it's for

Likely to appeal to strategy gamers ages 12+ who enjoy medieval-themed engine-building euros, in groups of 1-4.
