About the game

Shinkansen: Zero-Kei puts players in charge of building Japan's historic Tōkaidō bullet-train line ahead of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Each round you build your own train from carriage cards, and each carriage grants an action to lay track, build stations, or help prepare Olympic venues. Building carriages in the correct city order rewards bonus victory points. After five rounds representing the line's construction, the most efficient builder wins.

Hobbli's Notes

Shinkansen: Zero-Kei is a tidy route-building game with a nice historical hook tying train construction to the 1964 Olympics. The carriage-engine approach to building your train gives it a light engine-building feel layered on top of classic route-building. It's a solid mid-weight pick for train-game fans looking for something a bit different from tile-laying classics.

What we like

  • Solo mode adds flexibility for playing alone.
  • Historical theme ties mechanics to a real event nicely.
  • Carriage-based engine building adds a fresh twist on route-building.
  • Five-round structure keeps the game to a reasonable length.

Keep in mind

  • Moderate downtime while others plan their trains.
  • Complexity may be a bit much for casual players.
  • Niche train theme may not appeal to everyone.
