About the game

In Russian Railroads, players compete to build the largest and most advanced railway network by appointing workers to key tasks around a central board. Track development brings quick access to important cities, while modernizing locomotives and factories improves the efficiency of an ever-growing engine. Each player manages three personal rail lines that must be developed in a fixed color order, crossing scoring thresholds for victory points, bonus tiles, and new abilities along the way. After seven rounds of worker placement, the player with the most points wins the race to industrial dominance.

Hobbli's Notes

Russian Railroads is a tightly engineered worker-placement puzzle that rewards efficient engine-building over flashy plays. The interlocking track and factory systems give the game real depth, and there's real tension in deciding when to modernize versus when to push tracks forward. It's a satisfying pick for euro-game fans, though the dry industrial theme and heavier ruleset mean it's not an easy sell for newcomers.

What we like

  • The interlocking track and locomotive systems create a satisfying engine-building puzzle.
  • Multiple viable paths to victory keep strategies varied across plays.
  • Worker placement decisions stay tense throughout the game.
  • Bonus thresholds reward efficient long-term planning.

Keep in mind

  • Downtime can be noticeable when other players are deep in thought.
  • The industrial theme is thin and mostly abstract.
  • New players may need a full game to grasp the scoring interactions.
