About the game
Cosmic Encounter 42nd Anniversary Edition brings the classic game of alien conquest to a new generation with a revised rulebook, comic-style Quick-start Guide, and gorgeous translucent ships. Each player commands a wildly different alien race with its own rule-breaking special power, then negotiates, bluffs, and forms shifting alliances to claim planets across the galaxy. New Cosmic Combo cards let you build themed matchups on the fly. For 3-5 players, it's endlessly replayable chaos that plays completely differently every time.
Hobbli's Notes
Cosmic Encounter is one of our all-time favorite negotiation games: the asymmetric alien powers mean the rules are basically a suggestion by the time everyone's power interacts. It's a masterclass in social deduction disguised as a space conquest game. Just be ready for some serious downtime and table talk chaos.
What we like
- Variable alien powers make every game feel completely different.
- Rich negotiation and alliance-building creates memorable table stories.
- High production values with translucent ships and quick-start comic guide.
- New Cosmic Combo cards add fresh replayability for veterans.
Keep in mind
- High downtime, especially with five players.
- Kingmaking and swingy alliances can frustrate players who dislike negotiation.
- New players may be overwhelmed by the sheer number of alien powers.
Who it's for
Ideal for groups of 3-5 experienced gamers (12+) who love negotiation, alliances, and chaotic, high-interaction games.
