About the game
Dominant Species: Marine reimagines the acclaimed evolutionary strategy game in an ancient ocean setting as an ice age ends and species scramble to adapt. Players control one of four aquatic animal classes, reptiles, fish, cephalopods, or crustaceans, using action pawns to trigger speciation, migration, adaptation, and other evolutionary moves. Domination of habitats grants powerful special pawns, while Trait cards give each animal a unique ability from the outset. As the map expands with hex tiles representing the growing ocean, players compete to accumulate the most victory points by game's end. It streamlines several systems from the original Dominant Species for a smoother, still-deep experience.
Hobbli's Notes
Dominant Species: Marine keeps the strategic depth of the original while trimming some of its clunkier bookkeeping, making it a more approachable heavy Euro. The action-pawn placement and domination race are genuinely gripping once you're in it. A strong pick for groups who already love big evolutionary strategy games.
What we like
- Deep evolutionary strategy with meaningful action-pawn placement.
- Satisfying domination and adaptation mechanics.
- Strong replayability from variable Trait cards.
- Streamlined and smoother than the original Dominant Species.
Keep in mind
- Long playtime and heavy rules overhead.
- Steep learning curve for newcomers to the system.
- Falling behind early can feel punishing.
Who it's for
Experienced strategy gamers aged 14 and up seeking a deep evolutionary Euro game, best for a dedicated group of 2-4.
