About the game
In Lowlands, 2-4 players build a farm on the storm-battered coast of the North Sea, balancing personal profit against the community's need for protective dikes. You'll assign farmhands to expand pastures, breed sheep, and add buildings to your farmyard, or send them to help build the shared dike against the rising tide. Every resource you contribute to communal defense edges you up a track that pays off when floods come. It's a tense worker-placement game about balancing self-interest with collective survival.
Hobbli's Notes
Lowlands does something genuinely clever with its shared threat mechanic: contributing to the dike is both altruistic and strategically savvy, and that tension never fully resolves. The farm-building puzzle is satisfying on its own, but the flood mechanic elevates it. A great pick for worker-placement fans wanting something with a fresh hook.
What we like
- Unique shared-dike mechanic blends self-interest and cooperation.
- Deep, interlocking worker-placement and tile-building systems.
- Satisfying farm customization with meaningful long-term choices.
- High player interaction through the communal flood threat.
Keep in mind
- Long 100-minute playtime with a fairly steep learning curve.
- Heavy rules overhead may deter casual players.
- Downtime can build as the dike track requires group coordination.
Who it's for
Best for experienced gamers (14+) in groups of 2-4 who enjoy worker placement with meaningful shared stakes.
