About the game
The Manhattan Project: Energy Empire tasks players with building a 20th-century nation's industry, commerce, and government while managing the environmental costs of rapid growth. Through worker placement and tableau-building, players activate cards using workers and energy, generate power via dice representing different energy sources, and race to develop the most prosperous, well-balanced nation. Pollution accumulates as a side effect of industrial progress, and players must use science to mitigate its harmful effects. Set in the same universe as The Manhattan Project, it stands alone as a deeper economic strategy game.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team enjoys how Energy Empire ties its environmental theme directly into its mechanics: pollution isn't just flavor text, it actively threatens your engine. The dual work-or-generate turn structure creates meaningful tension between building your tableau and refueling your resources. Its tableau-building and worker placement combo rewards players who enjoy optimizing engines over multiple rounds. The variable player powers and modular setup add welcome replay value.
What we like
- Environmental theme meaningfully integrated into core mechanics.
- Satisfying tableau-building and engine optimization.
- Variable powers and setup add strong replayability.
- Solo mode available for single-player sessions.
Keep in mind
- Long playtime and considerable rules overhead.
- Can suffer from analysis paralysis with the many tableau options.
- Dice-based energy generation adds a luck element some may dislike.
Who it's for
Good for strategy gamers aged 13+ who enjoy worker placement and engine-building economic games in groups of 2-5.
