About the game

Pantheon has players guiding ancient Mediterranean peoples -- Egyptians, Romans, Iberians, Germans, and others -- as they travel, trade, and worship to build monuments to the gods. Using a large wooden footprint piece and smaller markers, players chart migration paths that can block rival routes. Along the way they gather offerings like dancers, produce, temples, and prayers to earn favor with unpredictable gods, unlocking special abilities and victory points. Monuments built with accumulated materials provide further scoring at the end of the game. Over six rounds and two scoring periods, players balance movement, resource gathering, and divine favor to come out ahead.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team likes Pantheon's blend of route-blocking movement with a resource-and-favor engine that rewards careful long-term planning. The 'unpredictable gods' theme is nicely reflected in the variable powers and drafting elements, keeping strategies fresh across plays. It's a mid-to-heavy euro that rewards a few plays to fully appreciate its interlocking systems, so it may not click immediately for newer gamers. Fans of Alea-style historical euro games should find plenty to enjoy here.

What we like

  • Rich interplay between movement, resource gathering, and divine favor.
  • Route-blocking mechanism creates meaningful player interaction.
  • Variable player powers and drafted god tokens add replayability.
  • Two scoring periods keep strategic goals evolving through the game.

Keep in mind

  • Rules and interlocking systems take a session or two to fully click.
  • Ninety-minute playtime with notable downtime may not suit lighter groups.
  • Ancient civilization theme is somewhat abstracted rather than deeply immersive.

Who it's for

Good for experienced euro gamers aged 12 and up who enjoy historical resource-and-favor games, ideally with two to four players.
