About the game

Pergamon sends 2-4 players to 1878 Turkey as archaeologists competing to excavate the ancient ruins of Pergamon and put their treasures on display for glory. A bidding mechanism determines who gets first pick of dig sites, rewarding those who bid modestly with earlier access before the best fragments are gone. Recovered artifacts are placed into exhibitions that earn honor and recognition. After twelve rounds, the archaeologist with the most glory wins this accessible tactical collecting game.

Hobbli's Notes

Pergamon's bidding-for-turn-order mechanic is a clever, understated puzzle: bid too much and you overpay, bid too little and you miss the best sites. It's a light-to-mid Euro that teaches quickly but still offers real tactical tension around timing and resource collection. The archaeological theme is nicely woven into the set-collection and tile-placement systems. A solid choice for groups wanting an approachable, historically flavored strategy game.

What we like

  • Clever bidding mechanism creates meaningful tactical tension.
  • Quick 45-minute playtime suits regular game nights.
  • Approachable rules make it easy to teach newcomers.
  • Historical archaeology theme adds nice flavor to a set-collection game.

Keep in mind

  • Limited replay variety once the bidding patterns are learned.
  • Lighter strategic depth may not satisfy heavy-Euro fans.
  • Sparse thematic categories suggest a fairly abstract presentation.
