About the game

Palazzo casts players as wealthy landowners in the late Renaissance, competing to construct the most magnificent palace. Each turn you can bid at auction for palace modules from the quarries or take time to earn the money needed to keep building. Balancing your finances against the urge to keep expanding your palace is the heart of the tension, and Reiner Knizia's clean auction design keeps every decision meaningful. As the second entry in Alea's medium box series, it delivers a satisfying mid-weight euro experience in about an hour.

Hobbli's Notes

Knizia's auction instincts are on full display here: every bid feels like it costs you something real, and the balance between building and earning is beautifully tuned. A great pick for groups who like their euros lean and sharp.

What we like

  • Elegant auction-and-build mechanism from Reiner Knizia.
  • Satisfying tension between spending and saving money.
  • Tight 60-minute playtime keeps the game moving.
  • Accessible rules for a mid-weight euro game.

Keep in mind

  • Auction downtime can slow the pace for some groups.
  • Thin Renaissance theme is mostly cosmetic.
  • Limited player interaction outside of bidding.
