About the game
Riverboat casts players as 19th-century Mississippi farmers organizing fields, harvesting crops, and shipping goods to New Orleans. Each of the four rounds unfolds through drafted phase cards, with the player who picked a phase acting first: creating a constant push-and-pull over turn order. You'll place workers, arrange crop types, fill docks with matching goods, and launch riverboats for bonus points. Michael Kiesling's tight phase-drafting structure makes for a satisfying, tactile farming and logistics puzzle.
Hobbli's Notes
Riverboat's phase-drafting turn order is its standout feature: choosing when to act versus what to do creates constant tension across all four rounds. The farming theme is nicely realized through the crop-organizing and dock-loading puzzle, giving it more personality than many abstract Euro designs. At 90 minutes with moderate-to-high downtime, it's best suited to a group that enjoys watching the whole board develop.
