About the game
The Staufer Dynasty puts you in the role of medieval nobles accompanying Henry VI as he tours six regions of a fractured Europe, each vying for power and prestige. Over five rounds, you'll deploy envoys and nobles, claim colorful treasure chests with unique effects, and jockey for the most influential office seats in each region. Careful timing matters, since only two regions score each round based on shifting scoring tiles. With secret job cards and a modular action board, every session unfolds with fresh tension and blocking opportunities. It's a rich area-control game dressed in genuine medieval history.
Hobbli's Notes
The Staufer Dynasty rewards players who can read the board and anticipate which regions will score next, turning positioning into a genuine mind game. We appreciate how the treasure chest system layers in bonus decisions without slowing the game down too much. The negotiation-free area majority tension feels satisfyingly cutthroat. It does ask for real upfront rules absorption, so first plays can run long, but the payoff is a meaty, historically grounded euro.
What we like
- Deep area-majority tension driven by the ever-shifting scoring regions.
- Treasure chest variety adds meaningful tactical choices each round.
- Modular board and secret job cards add strong replayability.
- Rewards careful planning and reading opponents' likely moves.
Keep in mind
- Longer 90-minute playtime with higher downtime between turns.
- Rules overhead may be steep for newer euro gamers.
- Scoring system can feel fiddly to track in early plays.
Who it's for
A great fit for experienced euro gamers aged 13+ who enjoy area-majority and area-control tension, best played with 3-5 players who don't mind a longer, thinkier session.
