About the game

The Downfall of Pompeii puts 2-4 players in the doomed city of Pompeii just before Vesuvius erupts in AD 79. Before the eruption, players place their pieces in buildings around the city, and drawn Omen cards let opponents hurl your pieces into the growing volcano. After the eruption, lava tiles spread destruction while players race to move their pieces and relatives toward the exits. The player who evacuates the most pieces safely wins this tense escape-the-disaster race. It's a simple but tightly wound tile-and-movement game built around an escalating threat.

Hobbli's Notes

The Downfall of Pompeii turns a historical disaster into a genuinely tense, accessible race game. The escalating eruption mechanism does a great job of ratcheting tension right up to the final moves. A solid pick for groups wanting light strategy with real thematic bite.

What we like

  • Tense race against a steadily escalating volcanic eruption.
  • Clever escalating threat mechanism builds real drama.
  • Accessible rules suit a wide range of ages.
  • Satisfying tactical piece placement and movement.

Keep in mind

  • Losing pieces to the volcano can feel harsh for some players.
