About the game
Primordial Soup casts 3-4 players as primitive amoeboid species competing to evolve and dominate a shared ecosystem. Each round, organisms drift or swim to feed, react to random environmental changes, and spend genes to grow stronger through movement, metabolism, reproduction, attack, or defense abilities. Players buy new genetic traits and reproduce their species, with organisms dying off as resources dwindle. The game ends when a species reaches a target score or the environment cards run out.
Hobbli's Notes
Primordial Soup offers a quirky, thematic take on evolutionary competition with genuinely unusual mechanics for its era. The variable player powers through gene acquisition give each species a distinct feel across plays. It's a product of its time with somewhat fiddly bookkeeping, but the ecosystem simulation remains a novel design. Fans of unusual, biology-themed euro games will appreciate its distinct flavor.
What we like
- Unique evolutionary theme with genuine mechanical depth.
- Variable gene-based powers create distinct strategies.
- Random environmental events keep each game different.
Keep in mind
- Rules and bookkeeping can feel dated and fiddly.
- Higher downtime detracts from pacing.
- Niche theme may not appeal to all groups.
Who it's for
Suited to 3-4 gamers (12+) who enjoy thematic evolution simulations and don't mind a bit of rules fiddliness.
